Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes located in the bony cavities of the face called the sinuses. It can be of viral, bacterial or allergic origin. In all cases, people with sinusitis experience irritation of the mucous membranes and abnormal mucus secretion. It is possible to distinguish different types of sinusitis depending on the areas of the face affected by the disease, namely frontal sinusitis, maxillary sinusitis or sphenoidal sinusitis. The disease can also be either acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis occurs after a viral infection such as the common cold. The duration of the inflammation does not exceed 4 weeks and it only occurs a maximum of 3 times a year. As for chronic sinusitis, it is repetitive and is usually caused by an allergy.
Symptoms of sinusitis
Sinusitis manifests itself as headaches and an uncomfortable feeling of heaviness on the face, especially around the eyes and on the forehead. The patient's eyes become red and watery and this is accompanied by severe nasal congestion, fever and sometimes loss of smell. Fever can reach 49°C in the case of chronic sinusitis. If the infection is of bacterial origin, it gives off a thick yellowish or greenish secretion, while in the case of a viral infection, the fluid is light in color.
In addition to these specific symptoms, sinusitis can also be recognized by the appearance of pain in the upper jaw or teeth that intensify when the patient leans forward. Bad breath can also be a consequence of sinusitis due to the connection that exists between the nasal cavities where the disease develops and the oral cavity.
