Native to the southern United States and Mexico, passionflower is a climbing plant that the Aztecs already used for its sedative properties. Later research showed that passionflower actually acts on the central nervous system, thus giving the stressed subject a feeling of calm. Passionflower is therefore highly recommended to fight against sleep disorders and nervous tension thanks to all its active ingredients. In homeopathy, the plant comes in several pharmaceutical forms, each with its own dosage.
Active substances
Passiflora incarta is the only species of the genus passiflora that is used as a sedative and antidepressant. The plant contains alkaloids known for their soporific, analgesic and antispasmodic action, as well as maltol, an organic compound known for its antidepressant properties.
Passiflora incarnata is mainly used in homeopathy to combat insomnia. Thus, it allows the nervous, anxious and restless subject to find a restful sleep. It can also be used to combat cardiac erethism as it helps reduce tension and anxiety. Finally, Passiflora incarta is an excellent substitute for tranquilizers of chemical origin due to its effectiveness against stress and mild depression.
Recommended dosages
In homeopathy, Passiflora incarnata comes in several forms. There are granules and globule doses based on lactose and sucrose, oral drops and ampoules which are hydro-alcoholic solutions as well as oral powder triturations that contain only lactose. For optimal effectiveness, it is important to choose an appropriate dilution. Indeed, the more chronic the disease, the lower the dilution should be, since in this case it is a question of treating a diseased organ and not the whole body.
To combat insomnia and nervousness, it is recommended to take 5 granules of Passiflora incarnata 5 CH twice a day. Higher dilutions, on the other hand, effectively combat nerve-related pathologies. It is then advisable to opt for taking 3 to 5 granules of Passiflora incarnata 9 CH, three times a day. For optimal action, it is advisable to take the remedy 15 minutes before bedtime, but the dose can be repeated when waking up at night. The lowest dilutions (from 1 to 3 CH) can be administered over the long term to combat insomnia and severe anxiety. In this case, it will be up to the treating physician to establish the most appropriate dosage as well as the duration of the treatment according to the severity of the symptoms.
