Rubella is a mild but contagious infection caused by a virus that particularly affects children. The contagion occurs during a period of 11 days, more precisely between 5 days before and 6 days after the rash. Congenital rubella is transmitted from the infected mother to the fetus during pregnancy. The risk of contamination is highest during the first 3 months of gestation (90%) and gradually decreases until the 5th month (25%). Infected pregnant women are at high risk of birth defects of the fetus, especially in the first few weeks of pregnancy. For this reason, termination of pregnancy is often recommended as soon as rubella infection is confirmed.
Symptoms of the disease
Rubella manifests itself as rashes accompanied by fever and lymph nodes. The fever flare-up usually occurs after an incubation period of 2 weeks. The temperature reaches 38°C, spreads to the trunk and can last for a few hours. There is also the appearance of lymph nodes and irritation of the throat which becomes red. However, a quarter of rubella cases do not show symptoms and recover spontaneously after 72 hours. In women, adults and adolescents, associated symptoms such as joint pain can be diagnosed. In extreme cases, arthritis also occurs. Complications are rare and the most well-known forms are neurological damage or thrombocytopenia.
Rubella treatments
Various homeopathic treatments are adapted for each phase of the disease. During the invasion phase, Ferrum Phosphoricum 5 CH is prescribed 4 to 5 times a day. When this phase has passed, it is advisable to take a dose of Pulsatilla 15 CH for four days, especially when the symptoms are moderate. If the rashes are intense, this treatment should be replaced by taking Belladonna 5 CH in order to promote the relief of the fever which becomes significant and proportional to the rashes. The homeopathic doctor can also prescribe remedies based on typical symptoms. Finally, it will be possible to use Mercurius Solubilis if you are in the presence of sweating, intense thirst and lymphadenopathy.
When to see a doctor?
Medical consultation is imperative for pregnant women. To this end, the control of your immune status with regard to rubella is more than recommended at the first signs of pregnancy. In addition, it is also advisable to have a MMR vaccination within one month of the beginning of pregnancy.
