Trismus is an involuntary tonic contraction of the pterygoids and masseters, two jaw muscles whose role is to allow the mouth to open. When constriction occurs, the affected person has difficulty opening their mouth temporarily, which then prevents them from chewing, swallowing, oral hygiene and verbal communication. Trismus is usually caused by prolonged inactivity of the jaw muscles and can occur, for example, following the removal of a molar. However, this disorder can also occur following exposure of the neck and head to radiation, following an infection or following the use of a drug. Trismus is also one of the characteristic symptoms of tetanus and can be accompanied by headaches and pain in the temporal regions.
Symptoms
In the vast majority of cases, the person with trismus has difficulty opening his mouth. If the disorder appears following a prolonged opening of the mouth, the subject may not feel any pain prior to the blockage of the masticatory muscles. On the other hand, if the affected person is already undergoing treatment, he or she may feel throbbing in the jaw before it contracts and the angle of opening of the mouth gradually decreases. In addition, trismus can also be accompanied by inflammation and pain in the pterygoids or tongue.
The recommended homeopathic remedies
Arnica Montana is one of the most indicated remedies for relieving trismus and effectively alleviating the associated muscle pain. For optimal therapeutic effectiveness, it is advisable to take a dose of Arnica montana 15 CH for 5 days. This treatment can also be supplemented with Hypericum for more effectiveness. This St. John's wort extract is available as a massage oil and should usually be applied to the masticatory muscles to relieve trismus. As a system, it is recommended to take 5 granules of Cheiranthus cheiri 15 CH four times a day for 3 days. Cuprum metallicum is also recommended to treat facial muscle disorders, at a rate of 5 granules per day, to be repeated as long as the attacks persist.
When to see a doctor?
If the symptoms persist after the various homeopathic treatments put in place, it is recommended to consult a doctor without delay. In addition, a medical consultation is also recommended in the event of the appearance of side effects following the ingestion of medications, adverse effects that can for example manifest themselves in the form of stomach upset or skin rashes.
