Rheum officinale is a homeopathic remedy prepared from a polygonaceae imported from Russia. It is the Chinese rhubarb, a herbaceous plant that is widely used in traditional medicine because of its laxative properties. Its therapeutic virtues are numerous, including its purifying and deworming action, but its preferred field remains gastroenterology. It was later discovered to be effective in relieving diarrhea. For the manufacture of the homeopathic remedy, the roots of the plant are mainly used.
Indications in gastroenterology
The homeopathic remedy Rheum officinale is mainly indicated for the treatment of diarrhoea, and it is particularly recommended in small children to treat colic due to teething. Dental diarrhea is manifested by an increase in the amount of stool and its liquid consistency, vomiting or nausea and abdominal pain. The child has a very strong smell, because apart from his acidic stools, his breath and vomit are also sour. Rheum officinale relieves diarrhea while reducing these symptoms and calming abdominal pain. Otherwise, caution should be exercised regarding the risk of dehydration or in the event of persistent diarrhoea. In these cases, Rheum officinale should only be taken as an adjunct treatment while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Recommended dosages
For the treatment of dental diarrhoea, systematically give 5 granules of Rheum officinale 9 CH after each bowel movement, allowing them to melt under the child's tongue. In toddlers, it is advisable to melt the granules in a teaspoon of water, or to mix them with the bottle, making sure to shake it vigorously until diluted before letting the child drink it.
